Easy Ways to Stay Motivated in Isolation

Small things you can do every day to be productive at a time when you might be struggling to get out of bed

I know this is out of my regular scope of content, but lets be honest, the current situation is out of EVERYONE's regular scope of REALITY...

Recently I posted something confrontational on Instagram, politely calling out the bullsh*t excuses that some of us are making about our lack of productivity... and then I fell into the same very trap that I was talking about.

Yes I recognize my experience isn't equal to everyone's, and that maybe some of us are sick, grieving, or even relieved to have some well-deserved time off of work. I agree, these are definitely reasons to take this time for yourself. But there is a big difference between taking time for yourself and slacking off.

..."there is a big difference between taking time for yourself and slacking off."

Now before you get angry and say, “Well I’m stressed and depressed because…

a) I can’t work and provide for my family”

b) I’m at home all day and my kids are driving me bonkers”

c) I’m home all day but I love my job and now I feel lost“

d) Or Insert any other number of reasons why you feel depressed right now

I HEAR YOU! We are all taking this one step at a time. Times like these make it easy to fall into the trap of “woe is me…this is awful...” Etc. This means it’s so so so important right now that we all try to stay positive, and those of us that are able, continue to try to inspire and lift others up.

So, if you’re caught in the cycle of sleeping late and watching TV all day while scrolling Tik Tok because you’re feeling down: Stop fueling the beast!

For me personally and I’m sure many others, doing nothing productive is depressing in itself and creates a terrible cycle: You feel bad, so you watch TV all day, and then you feel bad because all you did was watch TV all day and the cycle continues.

BREAK IT! Get up, and do something that’s damn well worth doing.

I’m not saying you have to train for a marathon or enroll in an online course. Choose something simple like:

-Getting up before 8 am every morning

-Try unplugging for the first hour of every day.

-Enjoy a cup of coffee in the sunshine

-Read a good book or graphic novel

-Go for a walk

-Write in your journal

-Practice yoga

-Practice meditation

Do it even if you have to fake it, even if it pains you to change into some clothes that ARE NOT pajamas (I will allow sweatpants and leggings because only serial killers wear jeans at home).

Remember! I fell into the 'woe is me' trap too! I would NOT be getting through it if I hadn't: worked out every morning, showered, and wrote in my journal. I did these things even though I DID NOT WANT TO. I didn't want to get out of bed, I slept in, I even went back to bed after my morning routine one day.

Whatever you choose, make this an important part of your routine, and build on it.

The point is...starting your day with a routine gets the ball rolling and puts you in a positive head space! Each day after my crash, I started feeling better, and today I felt good enough to write about it. You WILL get there!

And if you’ll notice, none of these suggestions ARE EVEN ABOUT BEING PRODUCTIVE! They’re about taking care of yourself. If you nurture your mind and body, the productivity will happen naturally.
